Adapting for Non-traditional Students

Between 2026 and 2031, the number of college-aged students in the population will drop by 15%, and a high employment rate will begin chipping away at college enrollment even sooner. As the enrollment crisis approaches, it’s time for colleges to focus more energy on non-traditional students. Check out our free white paper to find out how you can stop the enrollment crisis in its tracks.

According to Barnes & Noble, enrollment of non-traditional students is projected to increase twice as fast as that of traditional students in the next four years. In order to improve student retention and graduation rates during this shift, colleges need to recognize the challenges non-traditional students face and offer solutions accordingly.

Non-traditional students often have more responsibilities than traditional students, which leaves them at risk for poor performance. Because of their age, many must balance school with work, family life, and greater financial obligations.

A Barnes & Noble College survey also found that 80% of faculty are already seeing an increase in non-traditional students on their campuses and are adjusting to help them succeed. Their students benefit from flexibility, whether through moveable deadlines or extended office hours. Faculty members also find more success by integrating digital and applied-learning strategies into their classes.

Faculty can’t make these changes alone. Schools must invest in resources and learning tools that support a variety of students. They also need to provide information and training to equip faculty to help these students in their educational journeys.

Adapting for non-traditional students will be necessary for colleges hoping to keep enrollment high in the coming years. As soon your school can support an increase in non-traditional students, market to them! Show them how you will meet their needs and help them reach graduation—and make sure they can trust you to follow through on your promises. Stay ahead of the enrollment crisis and start building your non-traditional population now.
